What Is Overseeding?

Overseeding is the process of spreading new grass seed directly over your existing lawn without tearing up the turf or soil. When combined with core aeration, the seed falls into the aeration holes and makes direct contact with the soil, giving it the best chance to germinate and establish strong roots.

Why Does Your Grand Rapids Lawn Need Overseeding?

Over time, grass naturally thins out from foot traffic, weather stress, disease, and normal aging. Michigan's hot summers and cold winters take a toll on even well-maintained lawns. Overseeding introduces fresh, vigorous grass varieties that fill in gaps and increase your lawn's density, color, and resilience. Benefits include thicker turf that crowds out weeds, improved drought and heat tolerance, better disease resistance, enhanced color and curb appeal, and a stronger root system when combined with aeration.

Best Time to Overseed in Michigan

The ideal time for overseeding in the Grand Rapids area is early fall, September through October. Cool nights and consistent moisture create perfect germination conditions. Spring overseeding in April through May is also effective for lawns that need immediate repair after winter damage.

Our Overseeding Process

We start with core aeration to open up the soil. Then we spread premium grass seed at the right rate for your lawn's needs. We provide detailed aftercare instructions for watering and first mow timing. New grass typically germinates in 7 to 14 days with full establishment in 6 to 8 weeks.
