Most homeowners notice their lawn is thinner than it used to be but assume more fertilizer or more water will fix it. It won't. The only way to make a thin lawn thicker is to plant more grass. That's overseeding. Here are the five clearest signs you need it.

1. You can see soil between grass blades

Stand on your lawn and look down. If you can see the soil between blades from a normal standing height, the lawn is too thin. A healthy turf canopy is dense enough that the soil isn't visible.

2. Visible bare patches that keep coming back

Bare or thin patches are open invitations to weeds. Crabgrass, clover, and dandelions show up within weeks because there's no turf canopy competing for the space. If the same patches return every spring, the soil isn't the problem — the seed bank is.

3. Weeds are winning

If your weed pressure is climbing year over year, the underlying issue is almost always density. A thick, healthy lawn outcompetes weeds naturally. A thin one loses ground every season. Pre-emergent herbicide and weed control help, but the long-term solution is more grass.

4. The lawn looks rough right after mowing

If your lawn looks worse after a fresh cut — patchy, uneven color, or visible bare spots that hide when the grass is taller — you're masking a density problem with length. Overseeding fills it in so the lawn looks good cut short or long.

5. You haven't overseeded in 3+ years (or ever)

Lawns lose density every year to heat, drought, compaction, and old age. Without overseeding, you're fighting a losing battle. Even healthy-looking lawns benefit from a fall overseed every 2–3 years to maintain density.

Why fall is the only time to do it right

Late August through mid-October is the prime overseeding window in Kent County. Soil is still warm enough for fast germination, air is cooling so seedlings aren't stressed, and fall rain helps everything establish. Spring overseeding works — just not nearly as well. New seedlings have to face summer heat before they're rooted.
