Liquid vs. Core Aeration: Which Actually Works on a Michigan Clay Lawn?
If you've called around for lawn aeration in Grand Rapids, you've probably heard two very different pitches. Some crews spray a liquid. Others — us included — run a machine that pulls plugs of soil out of your lawn. They get lumped together under one word, "aeration," but on West Michigan's heavy clay they are not the same job.
What liquid aeration actually is. Liquid aeration is a sprayed soil conditioner — usually a mix of surfactants and organic acids meant to loosen soil chemically over time. It's fast, there's no machine, and it's cheaper to deliver. On light, sandy soil it can help. The catch: on the compacted clay most Kent County lawns sit on, a spray struggles to do what compaction actually needs — physical openings in the soil.
What core aeration does. Core (mechanical) aeration pulls thousands of small plugs out of the ground, leaving open channels for air, water, and roots to move. On clay, that physical relief is the whole point. Compacted clay chokes roots and sheds water instead of absorbing it; pulling cores breaks that cycle in a way a spray can't match.
The part almost nobody talks about: the seed. Aeration opens the soil. But an open lawn with no new seed is a missed opportunity. Overseeding right after core aeration drops fresh grass seed into those open channels — the single best moment all year for new grass to take. Here's the thing we hear over and over from new customers: the other crews that aerated never overseeded. That's like tilling a garden and never planting it.
